awd3

Monday, November 19th, 2007

i am taking this class that is supposed to make me write better as an engineer. it’s called awd, advanced writing in the disciplines. yes, i also think that is a lame name. we have to write five good-sized papers the whole year and get a few weeks to work on each one.

my class today started at 9.15 so i woke up at 9.10. as i walked in the door the teacher was talking about how since nobody was prepared for class today (not me being late, apparently no one had brought their drafts to work on in class), she would just hand back the papers we had turned in last week and let the class have an open workshop (read: we can go if we want). so class started at 9.15, i got there at like 9.17, and was back out the door by 9.20. i was literally back in my apartment less that 15 minutes after i left to go to class. i have the best awd class ever.

with all of that free time, you know i used it productively. i watched mighty ducks three, hence the title of this post. well, i thought it was clever.

in other, not related, but ten times more awesome news, IT WAS SNOWING when i was walking to class. i’m walking to class, see flurries whirling around in the light breeze and say to myself ‘today is going to be a good day’. and you know what? i got out of class in 15 minutes. i got a b+ on a paper i had two weeks to research and write and instead wrote in 3 hours the morning it was due. i got to watch d3. i’m going to see lou dobbs tonight. today is in fact a good day.

the quest for three squishy balls

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

i like to post things that i don’t have any use for in the free section of craigslist. i figure this way someone else may be able to use what i don’t want and we can avoid throwing it away. so last week i posted an ad for three squishy balls that i didn’t want or need. the text went like this:

i have three squishy foam balls from various promos that i’ve come across. two globes and one apple. would be good for small kids to play with or maybe dogs that wouldn’t tear them apart to eat them. contact me via email to arrange a pickup.

and i attached a picture so everyone would know exactly what i’m talking about.

i got a reply almost immediately from someone who wanted them for their kids physical therapist or something. about ten minutes after i sent that email out i got this one:

Oh my good lord jesus please tell me those three squishy balls are still available?! I have just returned from a 4 continent search for squishy balls and the three fine specimen you display in your ad are clearly the cream of the crop! I must have them! Now, don’t even bother responding if you no longer have the whole set. Really, what kind of simpleton, what kind of rogue, keeps two squishy balls, that’s rubbish! So, sir, if you do indeed still possess all three squishy balls, do not even think of sending them to the garbage heap, I will come and pick them up. Day or night! Rain or shine! I just need 24 hours notice so that I may secure proper transport. I hastily await your reply!

Sir Stephen Of the Balls

needless to say, i was laughing pretty hard after reading that. it was just so damn unexpected. so i felt as if i had to reply to poor steven and let him down gently:

my dearest sir steven,

the three squishy ball holy grail may, for the time being, have escaped your grasp once again. while they are clever in their deception and trickeries, they found themselves a suitor mere moments before your unearthing of this criagslist ad. should the tyrant who now has ownership control over what should rightfully be your squishy balls fall wayward and discard the notion of desire, to you i shall call.

my deepest sympathies

i haven’t heard back from him, but the first responder flaked so i just emailed him back to let him know that his grail is attainable once again. i hope it makes his day.

say no to scurvy shirt came in

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

got my say no to scurvy shirt a few days ago and i love it as much as i thought i would. the green is very green, but the graphic art looks exactly as i thought it would. the quality of the print seems good. only potential negative is the shirt itself is moderately thin.

asce field trip to parcel 18

Monday, November 5th, 2007

i’m a member of the northeastern university student chapter of the american society of civil engineers, or nuasce as we like to call it. this past week we organized a field trip to a new construction project on campus called ‘parcel 18′. i’m sure it will eventually bear the name of some rich, former northeastern graduate who gives the school an assload of money, but for now it is known by the parcel number of the tax map it is on.

it is going to be a five story complex consisting of three residential dormitory towers, one low-rise cafeteria and an office building. it is located at the corner of ruggles and tremont street:

it has been a parking lot for years for the northeastern-owned building you can see to the right of the parcel as can be seen in this yahoo aerial:

here are some shots of the trip:

this is a shot of the building from ruggles t station which is the big white building in the top of the frame in the above aerials.

the staging area where the trailers and material are stored and managed.

looking up at the construction stairs. the construction elevator is the orange and plywood thing to the right.

sixth floor. this was as high as we could go for safety reasons.

sixth floor again. looking across from the east tower to the middle tower you can see the different floors.

on the sixth floor. asce members listening to our tour guide.
